A thread can fill the whole chat area, and you can start one from the message hover bar.

Threads open in a side panel and can expand to fill the chat area. Each channel remembers the thread you had open.
The hover bar on a message has a button that starts a thread.

A thread with no replies yet doesn't show a replies line under its message.

The sidebar no longer shows your full email address, so it won't end up on a stream.
