You can pick how messages look under Appearance → Messages in settings. Cozy is how they've always looked, Compact puts each one on a single line, and Bubbles gives each its own bubble.

Your own messages can sit on the right, like they do in most phone chat apps.

The bar that shows up when you hover a message sits at its top corner and stays off the text. It has four quick reactions, more reactions, reply and a ⋯ button. Threads, pin, edit, copy, report and delete moved into the ⋯ menu, the same one a right-click opens.
